Natural Diamond vs. Lab Grown Diamonds
We Got Both!
Natural diamonds vs. Lab Grown Diamonds. We got them both.
So what's the difference?
The main difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds is their origin. Natural diamonds are formed under the earth's mantle over billions of years and are extracted from the earth's surface through mining. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created through a technological process that replicates the conditions necessary for diamond formation, in a matter of weeks to months. While both natural and lab-grown diamonds have the same chemical composition and physical properties, lab-grown diamonds are typically less expensive than natural diamonds.
How Lab Grown Diamonds Are Created
Lab-grown diamonds are created through a process called Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) or High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) methods. In the CVD method, a small diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber along with carbon-rich gases like methane, hydrogen, and others. The gases are ionized, and the carbon atoms bond to the diamond seed, layer by layer, forming a rough diamond crystal. The HPHT method mimics the natural process of diamond formation under the earth's mantle by subjecting a diamond seed to high pressure and high temperature conditions, enabling carbon atoms to bond and form a diamond crystal. Both methods can take several weeks to several months to grow a diamond, and the resulting stones are optically, chemically, and physically identical to natural diamonds.
Deciding Factors- What’s right for you?
Pros / Cons
Natural:
1. A natural diamond is usually something that gets passed along in the family from generation to generation. (I’m sure you have something your grandparents gave you).
2. Natural diamonds can get expensive depending on what you want.
3. Over the years you own a natural diamond it will appreciate.
4. Some people look at owning a natural diamond as wearing a real Rolex or a real Loui Vuitton handbag vs. a fake.
Lab Grown:
1. Lab grown diamonds are fairly new and they will never appreciate in value.
2. Because of reason number one you have to decide if it will be appreciated when you want to pass it down to your kids or grandkids.
3. The cost of lab grown diamonds is considerably lower then natural diamonds. They are more affordable and will give you the glamorous look you have always dreamed of.
4. A positive way to look at lab grown diamonds is not that you are wearing a fake, however it’s a plant that was grown in your home rather then naturally grown in nature.
